Fashion Innovation Africa to Hold Inaugural Conference in Lagos This October

The new industry conference will bring together fashion founders, investors, policymakers and business leaders to discuss the financing, manufacturing and commercial systems needed to support the growth of African fashion.

Fashion Innovation Africa (FIA) will hold its inaugural conference on October 22, 2026, at the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event is expected to bring together more than 300 participants from the fashion, finance, technology and government sectors to examine the business structures needed to support Africa’s fashion industry.

Endorsed by the Lagos State Government, the conference will take place under the theme “From the Atelier to the Economy: The Architecture Behind African Fashion.”

The programme will focus on some of the industry's most persistent commercial challenges, including access to finance, local manufacturing capacity, supply chain resilience, production standards and international market access.

While African designers have gained visibility through international fashion weeks, retail partnerships and growing global interest, building commercially sustainable businesses requires reliable production networks, distribution channels and access to investment. These are among the issues FIA intends to bring into discussion.

The full-day event will feature a government keynote, fireside conversations with fashion founders, three panel discussions and concurrent masterclasses. Participants will include representatives from financial institutions, regulatory agencies, technology companies, logistics providers and businesses operating across the fashion value chain.

For Uche Ajene, Convener of Fashion Innovation Africa, the development of Nigeria's music and film industries offers a useful reference for what stronger commercial structures can make possible.

“There was a time when Nigerian music and Nollywood had immense talent but were still building the structures needed to support their growth and global reach. Today, both have made significant strides in taking Nigerian creativity to the world,” Ajene said.

She believes the fashion industry has comparable commercial potential, provided the systems supporting its businesses receive greater attention.

“African fashion has similar potential, but realising it requires more than talent and visibility. We need stronger systems for financing, production, distribution, standards and market access. FIA is bringing the key players together to help build that architecture and position African fashion for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.”

The conference's emphasis on bringing different parts of the industry together is particularly relevant to independent fashion businesses. Access to capital, dependable manufacturers, logistics services and export markets can determine whether a designer is able to fulfil larger orders, enter new markets or expand beyond a small-scale operation.

Beyond the discussions, FIA 2026 will provide opportunities for businesses to present solutions, establish partnerships and explore commercial opportunities across the fashion value chain.

The October gathering will be the first edition of Fashion Innovation Africa, an initiative established to connect the businesses, institutions and individuals involved in developing the continent's fashion economy.
